The Appeal of Timber Garages and Carports for Developers

We’re seeing increasing numbers of developers choosing timber garages, car barns and carports for both timber frame sites and traditional builds. We asked one of our Sales team, Ethan Johnston about this trend, and what the appeal is to the buyers he’s speaking to on a daily basis.

According to Ethan, one of the key drivers for developers is cost – unsurprisingly in the economic environment we find ourselves in – materials and labour both come in under the cost of traditional garage construction.

“Although costs are lower, many developers choose timber garages, car barns and car ports because their customers prefer the look – it can be an easy way to add perceived value to a house buyer whether it’s a large scale development or a one-off luxury build,”  Ethan continued. “The speed of construction is also dramatically quicker, creating considerable cost savings”

On many sites now, you will find a mixture of traditional build, timber built car barns and car ports, according to Ethan.

From the design side, Scott’s lead times on car barns are quick – usually around a week – and car ports are quicker, at around 2 – 3 days.

For developers asking us about timber garages, car barns and car ports, they want to see examples of our work, as well as materials used. With so many examples (see images), we seem to be a natural choice for this.
